EAGLE, D.V.M. 2-year-old Great Dane chews wood every time he's confined alone in a room. He completely chewed out a window sill. Why does he do Shawnee, Okla. easy for a dog this size to develop claustrophobia when he's confined in a relatively small area.

Most dogs that are isolated for long periods will grieve, be lonesome and resentful. In this mood, they often perform destructive acts. Your melancholy Dane needs lots of room inside and outside. When you must leave him, I'd suggest he wait out your absence in a large garage or similar place. Soft music will make him feel less deserted.

It's impossible to enjoy a dog this size if he isn't trained in obedience and response. If you can catch him being destructive, punish him. The dog won't associate the punishment and the act unless they're simultaneous. Observance training is your answer, but until your Dane gives up on window sills, you'll just have to keep him where he can't chew his anxieties away. The Pet Doctor will answer questions.

Those with selfaddressed envelopes will receive earlier replies. Address inquiries to the Pet Doctor in care of The Commercial Appeal. MRS. ALBERTA HAMILTON Rites Will Be Tomorrow At Adamsville, Tenn. Mrs.
